Concurrent to reading about Baron von Trenck, I'm browsing through yet another tome about the French Revolution. This one is very different. I mentioned literary narratives in the telling of history in an antiquarian sense; Mr. Carlyle is positively florid! Giddily so. He's a Scot and has a wonderful lyrical style. Somewhat tongue in cheek as he playfully describes the decadence of the effete French prior to the revolt. What consternation it must have been for the British to spend near twenty years defeating Napoleon. Old Boney, they called him, diminutizing him. (Emperor! What cheek!) The French were roused. Centuries of degradation overthrown and a burst of energy; violent energy to be sure.
What we see described as the 'mythic' Deep State presently is somewhat akin to the Old Regime. Individuals used the State to amass fortunes. They paid off the Church for admission to heaven and their heirs became more and more distant from the masses. The practitioners of the bogus rituals grew fat on the grift, the people relegated to less than crumbs. The First and Second Estates... overthrown. I am in agreement.
Individuals continue to use the government to amass wealth. The government takes what it can of the inheritance and recycles it back to said individuals in another guise. I'm specifically thinking of Diane Feinstein and her husband. He gets no bid contracts to purchase government property at fire sale prices, she gets to be Senator for life. Yes, they need to be overthrown.
Marchon, marchon... Carlyle looks like he couldn't be bothered.
A bit too much enthusiasm for a Presbyterian? Je le pense.
